Runway Pricing — What a Second of Gen-4.5 Actually Costs
Updated July 17, 2026
Runway sells subscriptions in credits, but what you're really buying is seconds of video. Their own pricing page states the conversion — so here it is turned into the number that matters: dollars per second of Gen-4.5, their flagship model.
All numbers below come from runwayml.com/pricing as of the date above. Plans change; we re-check quarterly.

The per-second math
Dollars per second of Gen-4.5
Standard: $15 ÷ 52s ≈ $0.29/second — a single 5-second clip costs about $1.44 of subscription. Pro: $35 ÷ 187s ≈ $0.19/s. Max: $95 ÷ 791s ≈ $0.12/s. The volume discount is real but even Max prices a 5-second clip at ~$0.60.
The iteration tax
AI video is an iteration game — most usable clips take 3–6 attempts. At Standard rates that's $4–9 of credits per keeper. Budget by keepers, not by generations, and Standard's 52 seconds/month suddenly reads as ~10 attempts, or 2–3 finished clips.
What you're actually paying for
Runway's value is the suite around generation: the editor, motion tools, 4K upscale pipeline, and being first to its own frontier models. If you live in that workflow, the subscription is coherent. If you only want the clips, you're paying suite prices for engine output.
Is Runway worth it?
For filmmakers and editors who use Runway as a creative environment — generate, edit, upscale in one place — Pro at annual pricing is the honest sweet spot.
For everyone who just wants finished clips from prompts, per-clip generation on hosted engines undercuts every tier above. Run the same prompt both places and compare keepers-per-dollar, not demo reels.
Just want the clips?
Generate per-clip instead of per-subscription: Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 and Seedance run here with first videos free — no monthly commitment, no credit expiry. (For the ByteDance flagship line, see Seedance on Sunra.)

Is Runway free?
There's a one-time 125-credit trial (roughly 10 seconds of Gen-4.5). There is no recurring free allowance.

Paid plans export without watermarks. The free trial's policy isn't stated on the pricing page.
Do Runway credits roll over?
Only on Max, and only for 1 month. Standard and Pro credits expire monthly.
