Sora 2 is OpenAI's second-generation video model, launched on 30 September 2025. Its headline advance was audio: speech, sound effects and ambience generated in sync with the picture, rather than added afterwards. It also improved physical plausibility — objects that fall, collide and settle the way real ones do — and shipped alongside an invite-only Sora iOS app with a social feed, remixing, and "cameos", which let people insert their verified likeness into a generated scene after a one-time video-and-audio check. A higher-quality Sora 2 Pro tier was offered to ChatGPT Pro subscribers, and API access existed for developers.
OpenAI has since wound the product down. It announced in March 2026 that Sora was being discontinued, retired the Sora app and web experience in April 2026, and set the Sora API — including the Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro endpoints — to shut down on 24 September 2026.
