What is Wan AI?
Wan (通义万相, "Tongyi Wanxiang") is a family of AI video generation models developed by Alibaba. Given a text prompt or a still image, Wan generates short cinematic video clips — with realistic motion, camera language, and, since Wan 2.5, natively synchronized audio.
Wan built its reputation as one of the strongest open-weight video model families: 2.1 and 2.2 are published under Apache 2.0 with weights on GitHub and Hugging Face, so anyone can run them on their own hardware. That changed with 2.5 — Alibaba's Wan-AI repository still stops at 2.2, and 2.5 onward ship API-first with no public weights. So 2.5 is something you access, not something you download.
